Real Estate Update in False Creek Flats

East Park: The New Park Coming to False Creek Flats

As the False Creek Flats neighbourhood continues to develop with the forthcoming construction of the new St. Paul’s Hospital campus and the growth of cultural attractions in the area, park spaces are growing too. In the nearby neighbourhood of Olympic Village, there’s a recently-created park called East Park. This park is a stretch of open law extending the width of two city blocks.

But it ends abruptly.

Blocking the park from the False Creek waterfront is the construction site for Tesoro by Concert, a luxurious residential development on the False Creek waterfront. However, that will be changing eventually. Upon the completion of Tesoro, East Park will extend from Olympic Village to the nearby waterfront – and beyond.

East Park: Where It Is & Where It Is Going

East Park currently occupies a stretch of grassy lawn within Olympic Village. Though the park is framed on all sides by condo buildings, it’s a surprisingly well-positioned park already. Steps from the Creekside Community Centre and just a block over from Milton Wong Plaza, East Park is located nearer to the core of Olympic Village. It’s already a well-regarded haunt for local residents. In fact, Navio at the Creek, a multi-unit residential development by Concert consisting of townhomes and condos, runs alongside East Park with residents in townhomes walking out their front door to the park itself. At the southern edge of East Park is Pinnacle on the Park.

In the future, East Park will extend out to Science World, almost touching the existing Citygate condo towers, like Citygate 1.

Outside Science World at Vancouver’s False Creek. This is where the new park will end, right at the edge of False Creek Flats.

What’s Happening Right Now & What Is Going To Happen

As of November 16, 2022 the City of Vancouver has entered into a phase of public consultation on the future design and vision for the park.

This public engagement is intended to hear from community stakeholders as to the direction of the design and vision for East Park, and how it can offer amenities to residents and improve ecological restoration on the heavily-developed shoreline of False Creek.

[November 16, 2022], the Vancouver park board launched public engagement seeking residents’ input on the design and vision for the planned park beside Olympic Village. The area, just southwest of Science World on the False Creek shoreline, is currently called East Park, but will later be given an official name through a separate process.

As part of the False Creek waterfront is a concrete deck dating back from Expo 87, the new reimagining of the park will allow for a redesigned shoreline to positively affect the area’s ecology and flood resistance. This is clearly going to be a longterm project extending into the future. Thankfully, this project will be a benefit to current and future residents of False Creek Flats.

Planning for East Park will incorporate several considerations, including flood protection, climate change, shoreline ecology, and the area’s historic importance to the local First Nations.
